Wondering how to improve your credit score?

A person holds a smartphone displaying a credit score of 752 with a gauge. Below the score are options for payment history, credit usage, and credit age. A laptop and cup of coffee are on the table in the background.

Most people have heard of a credit score, but not everyone is sure how it works – or why it matters.

It often comes up when you apply for a loan, a credit card, or even a phone plan. Suddenly that number becomes important, and it can raise a few questions.

So what exactly is a credit score and what can you do if yours isn’t where you’d like it to be?

Understanding your credit score

In simple terms, your credit score is a reflection of how you’ve handled debt and credit in the past.

Lenders use it as one part of the picture when deciding whether to approve a loan application or what terms to offer.

How is credit score calculated? Credit reporting agencies determine this number using information from your credit report – things like your repayment history, the types of credit you hold, and how often you’ve applied for new credit. It’s a way of gauging consistency and reliability.

While each agency uses its own range, a higher score generally means you’re considered lower risk.

People often ask, “What is a good credit score?” – and while there’s no single answer, a score that sits in the upper band of your report is generally viewed more positively.

Checking your score

If you’re unsure where you currently stand, you’re entitled to request a free credit report every three months from each of Australia’s main credit reporting bodies. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) explains your rights and how to access these reports safely.

Checking regularly helps you spot errors and understand what lenders might see when assessing an application.

If you’d like more practical guidance on how to find credit score details and what those numbers mean, government resources such as moneysmart.gov.au provide a clear, step-by-step overview.

Steps that can support a stronger score

There’s no secret formula for how to improve your credit score, but consistent, responsible habits make a difference over time.

These general steps are a good place to start:

  1. Pay on time whenever possible

Regular, timely payments send a strong signal of dependability. Setting up reminders or direct debits can take the stress out of remembering due dates.

  1. Limit new credit applications

Each application shows up on your record. Too many in a short period can give the impression you’re taking on more than you can manage.

  1. Keep balances under control

Using a small portion of your available credit – rather than the maximum – can help demonstrate restraint and stability.

  1. Maintain long-standing, well-managed accounts

If you have older credit accounts that have been run smoothly, keeping them open can show a consistent history of responsible use.

  1. Review your report for mistakes

Occasionally, outdated or incorrect entries appear on credit reports. Having them corrected can remove unnecessary hurdles to improvement.

  1. Give it time

A credit score reflects patterns, not single actions. Gradual improvement over months of consistent behaviour is more sustainable than sudden changes.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Scores differ slightly across agencies, so focus on the overall trend rather than the exact number.
  • Quick-fix “credit repair” offers are rarely effective. Real progress comes from consistent habits.
  • If you’re managing multiple debts or facing credit challenges, it can help to talk things through with a qualified professional before making big decisions.

It’s a familiar saying, but at Oasis Financial Planning, we believe knowledge is power.

Understanding how to improve your credit score – and how it connects to your wider financial plan – is where meaningful progress begins.

If you’d like to build on that momentum, we’re always here for a conversation.

Every time I see Steve present at a seminar, I realise it is so much more than financial information, which anyone can provide, and more about finding the right motivator. Steve definitely knows how to motivate in a friendly non confronting manner. I can see why his greatest successes are with clients that stay with him year on year.
